Which blender makes the best smoothies?
First things first, what type of blender do you need? There are SO MANY out there, the options are endless! I’m not an expert on the pros and cons of the Ninja, Vitamix, or Blendtec, but I’ve heard great things about each option. All I know is that we’ve had this NutriBullet for years and love it.
With the NutriBullet, I can make just the amount I need for one smoothie and it’s super easy to clean. Word of caution: pay attention to the “MAX FILL” line on your blender cup. It’s there for a reason. It took several overflowing messes and a snickering husband before I finally stopped over-filling my blender cup 🙂
What should I look for when buying protein powder?
Before we get into the ingredients, let’s also talk protein powders. Working in the natural/organic food industry, I’ve tried my fair share of protein powders. For me, whey protein is better on my digestion than plant-based, but that’s a personal call!
I highly recommend researching protein powders (or any other supplement you’re considering) on Lab Door . They rank supplements based on label accuracy and safety so you can do a gut check that what you’re buying is safe and effective. Right now, I’m hooked on Integrated Supplements Whey Protein Isolate, which can also be found at Target. It’s hands down the best tasting chocolate protein powder I’ve ever found.
What can you add to chocolate protein shakes?
If you’re anything like me, I thought chocolate protein powder only went with peanut butter banana smoothies (heavenly, btw). I never thought chocolate powder would mix well with greens and fruit. I WAS SO WRONG. There are endless options for smoothie add-ins when you use chocolate protein powder, here are a few:
- Mixed berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or cherries
- Other frozen fruits: banana, mango, or pineapple
- Almond Butter
- Peanut Butter
- Almond Milk
- Coconut Milk
- Greek yogurt
In my opinion, the key to a balanced smoothie is to even out the fruit to greens ratio. A fruit-only smoothie is going to be a sugar shock to your system. However, I don’t feel it’s necessary to completely steer clear of naturally-derived sugar.
Fruits such as mixed berries are going to be lower in sugar and carbohydrates, while being higher in antioxidants. By having equal parts fruit and leafy greens, or even slightly more greens than fruit, I feel like I’m getting exactly what I need.
What else do I need for a perfect protein shake?
Last but not least, buy yourself some jumbo smoothie straws, because those skinny ones don’t cut it! If you want to be eco-friendly, check out these stainless steel reusable straws that come with a special cleaning brush.
Please enjoy this Chocolate Berry Protein Shake recipe and let me know what you think! I’d love to hear from you. Also, keep checking back for more smoothie recipes because there’s more where this came from 🙂
Chocolate Berry Protein Shake
This Chocolate Berry Protein Shake is not only delicious but has the perfect balance of nutritious greens, antioxidant-rich berries, and whey protein for either a meal replacement or mid-day snack.
- 1 cup spinach fresh or frozen
- 3/4 cup berries frozen
- 1/2 banana fresh or frozen
- 1 cup almond milk unsweetened vanilla
- 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
- 1/4 cup water
Start by adding the spinach, mixed frozen berries, and 1/2 of a banana to your blender cup.
Be sure that the heaviest ingredients are closest to the blender blade.
For example, in a NutriBullet, the spinach would go FIRST at the bottom of the cup, followed by the berries and banana.
The NutriBullet cup is then flipped over before blending starts, causing the berries & banana to be closest to the blade.
In a regular upright blender, add the berries and banana FIRST, so they are closest to the blender blade, followed by spinach.
Next, add the almond milk, chocolate protein powder, and water
Blend until all ingredients are well mixed - enjoy!
